The 4 Tips on How to Feel Successful in Life

I use the above quote with my college students in an attempt to challenge them to look at life, from a different perspective. In challenging our perspectives, and even our definitions, I am not merely playing semantics as I firmly believe that words actually do hold meaning. If you aren’t sure about the validity of that statement, think of the last time someone’s words either caused you joy or caused you pain. Words do have the power to affect our emotions, therefore, by challenging ourselves to look at our own definitions from a new perspective has the ability to change how we feel.

How I define success, or how success is defined for me, influences how I feel about myself. Many of us have culturally learned that success is defined by tangible goods and/or wealth. We hear expressions such as “If I have more things than someone else, I am successful”; or, “if I have a title or initials after my name, I am successful”. These cultural statements aside, I hope that people who have worked hard to accomplish what they feel is a level of success take pride in themselves. Yet, the question remains, does someone else’s level of success negate, or take away from, my perceived level of success? In other words, is one’s success defined in relation to another’s accomplishments?

For example, a person who works hard and deservedly obtains the position of CEO is perceived as reaching success in life. While another person who works hard, and is known to be the best plumber in town, although an employee of the company, not owner or partner, would we agree that that person also has attained success? What about the trash collector who strives to be the best collector there is; have they attained success? If we will agree that the people in these examples have attained success, would we also agree that each of them is equally as successful? I say “yes!”

So why is it that many of us, although accomplished in what we do, continue to feel less successful than the person holding a higher position or making more money? I believe that one answer is due to our drive to challenge ourselves and to strive for excellence. These motives and qualities are positive, yet at the same time, they also perpetuate a self-told narrative that others are always better than I. Does this mean we shouldn’t strive for betterment? Of course we should strive to better ourselves, but not at the cost of sacrificing our core being or inner peace.

A quote attributed to the Catholic priest Fr. Joseph Martin (co-founder of Father Martin’s Ashley, now named Ashley Addiction Treatment) states “the good is the enemy of the best “. Striving to grow, mature and gain wisdom leads us to feelings of accomplishment and possibly even success. But that depends on our definition of success; ah I have just taken us back to the beginning of this article, yet not any closer to an answer than when you first started reading.

Is there a definitive definition of success? Can we objectively apply one definition to everyone, or are we left with a subjective understanding of the concept of success? Personally, I believe it’s the latter. If the definition is subjective, then how I define success for my own life is based partly on my perspective about my life. Therefore, I suggest that each of us change our perspective from one based on societal objectivity of the definition of success with its comparison to others, to a perspective wherein we strive to obtain success which includes inner peace, happiness and self worth.

Making this perspective shift requires us to look within ourselves to examine our motives for wanting to better ourselves and attain success. As mentioned above, the desire toward betterment is a positive notion and goal, yet it depends on my motivation. We need to ask ourselves “Why do I desire to be better?” Why do I strive for success, and how will I know success when I achieve it?” If my motivation toward betterment and success is based solely on the belief of “beating everyone else”, then I may be willing to compromise my core being and values to achieve that height of success, or else I may view myself as a failure. In this scenario, one’s success comes at a price. The idea of seeking betterment is not the issue; the motivation guiding you is what, in the end, causes one to gain everything, yet continue to feel empty and restless.

How can I change my motivation and perspective about success so that I may attain the best I can be and feel inner peace?

    1. Meditate: Take time each day, even just 10 or 20 minutes, and meditate. Either find a quiet location, or take a walk; whichever helps you best to focus. Now, focus on your breathing, not trying to control your breaths, just noticing them. Be aware of the air entering and the air leaving. Be aware of what you are feeling. Don’t judge the feeling, just notice it. Practice this daily and over time you notice that not only is the act of meditating becoming easier, but you yourself are feeling more at peace.

 

    1. Examine: Take time to reflect on what success means to you. Don’t judge your definition, simply define it. How does the definition make you feel? Does your definition match your core self and values? If not, ask yourself what you will need to change so as to create a match? Keep in mind that sacrificing who you are for temporal gain will not, in the long term, bring you to a state of inner peace.

 

    1. Confer: Take time to meet with family or close friends whom you trust to discuss your thoughts and feelings from numbers 1 and 2 above. Listen, without judgement, to their feedback. The next time you meditate, reflect on the feedback and your feelings concerning what you heard.

 

  1. Act: A saying I often repeat is “there are no problems, only solutions”. I don’t know who first said it, but it’s meaning motivates me to reframe my thinking and change my perspective from “problem-oriented” to “solution-oriented”. Creating a deep belief that solutions are possible, we will reach for success while maintaining a sense of inner peace.

The Place of Entrepreneurship Competence in Business Success and National Development

The pivotal position occupied by entrepreneurship as a sustainable tool for rapid economic growth and development of a country cannot be over emphasized. This is evident in several available literatures written by scholars on the subject matter but a closer examination of these literatures show tilted emphasis and concentrations on some common areas relating to entrepreneurship.

Increasing competitions, rapid and constant changes in internal and external environment of business activities, and the significant influence of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) on the economy generally have resulted in a growing interest in studying the role of factors stimulating successful entrepreneurship, business success and national development.

Though, entrepreneurship, have played and can play more of these positive roles, is not an easy vocation as it does not always guarantee a hundred per cent triumph. There are several critical areas of knowledge and factors that must be acquired and put in place to enable entrepreneurs achieve a measure of business success and consequently contributing to national development.

Several researches have been conducted in areas of entrepreneurship competency, entrepreneurship success and national development.

Most literatures relating to entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship success tend to unquestionably argue that most entrepreneurial fiascos are essentially due to inadequate financial resources (e.g. Adeyemo and Onikoyi, 2012). Such research outcomes have no doubt influenced government policy direction in many developed and developing countries of the world through the creation of financial agencies and provision of financial resources to business units for the sole purpose of boosting and sustaining entrepreneurial development for rapid national development.

The above, policy strategy unfortunately has led to the continuous negligence on the part of the government, scholars and business operators in these countries to considering other vital factors like entrepreneurial competency which equally contributes to successful entrepreneurship, business success and national development.

The current literatures on the subject do not provide sufficient explanations to the role general and/or specific competences play in successful entrepreneurship, business success and national development. This has thus, made the relationship between entrepreneurial competence and entrepreneurship success to be important topic within organizational literatures. The above fact is evident in several available studies done by scholars on the subject matter (e.g Crook, Todd, Combs, Woehr, and Ketchen, 2011; Mitchelmore and Rowley, 2010; Inyang and Enuoh, 2009; Laguna, Wiechetek, and Talik, 2013 e.t.c).

Many of these studies identified entrepreneurship competences like communication competence, financial competence, marketing competence, business ethics competence, social responsibility competence, decision-making competence and leadership competence as catalysts to entrepreneurship success and national development. We shall be duelling on our discussion more on these entrepreneurial competences to see how they individually contribute to successful entrepreneurship, business success and national development.

As said earlier at the beginning, entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship success play strategic roles in economic growth, economic transformation and development of the society. These roles are noticeable in the numbers of jobs created, the level of wealth generated and the rate of indigenous entrepreneurship promoted in several countries around the world.

There is no doubt that government of the world have put great efforts in promoting entrepreneurship development, business success and economic development through provision of financial resources directly or otherwise through various agencies and under different terms and conditions, this fact prompt one to ask a question of high concern.

Why are there still high rate of business failure around the world? Without much thinking, the failures are due mainly to entrepreneurial incompetency of those concerned with making the daily business decisions of these businesses. Many business failures can be said to be and are largely attributed to lack of entrepreneurial competence.

Most of the businesses failed unknowingly even before there are started because of lack of one of the required competence; project evaluation and management. This does not therefore; make it surprising while entrepreneurship competence has often been identified as the missing link for successful entrepreneurship, business failure and consequently crawling national development and in some instances stalled economy. What then is entrepreneurship competence?

Before we proceed to defining and explaining entrepreneurship competence and understand the contextual meaning in which it is employed in this writing with simplicity, it will be very imperative to first and foremost comprehend what entrepreneurship is.

Entrepreneurship may be defined as the process through which something new and valuable is created through the dedication and effort of someone who takes on financial, psychological, and social risks and seeks personal satisfaction and monetary rewards (Hisrich & Peters 1986).

European Commission, (2006) defined Entrepreneurship as a dynamic and social process where individuals, alone or in collaboration, identify opportunities for innovation and act upon these by transforming ideas into practical and targeted activities, whether in a social, cultural or economic context.

Critical assessment of the above two definitions summarized the concept of entrepreneurship by stressing creation processes and performance of targeted activities. Entrepreneurship as defined above is not necessarily limited to the roles and characters of entrepreneurship involving creativity, innovation and risk taking, and most importantly, the ability to plan, manage projects and to turn ideas into action in order to achieve set objectives for successful entrepreneurship. But, it requires tact, art and competency to achieve winning edge success.

Entrepreneurship success is a multidimensional phenomenon. It includes multiple criteria of financial characters like profit maximization, revenue maximization, dividend maximization as in the case of shareholders etc., and non-financial characters for example larger share of market, customer satisfaction, perpetual enterprise existence etc. To achieve success in any of the following sections, one must be competent in his/her chosen area of enterprise.

Entrepreneur competence can therefore be defined as the cluster of related knowledge, attitudes, and skills which an entrepreneur must acquire or possess to achieve an outstanding performance and optimize the business objective(s) amidst several constraints. Every job/role has a skill and competency requirement. Every career like entrepreneurship draws on the competence of an individual. For every entrepreneurial undertaking one needs certain competencies. Entrepreneurship competence is simply the skill which an individual needs to do an allotted entrepreneurial job successfully.

Entrepreneurship competence constitutes a cluster of related knowledge, attitudes, and skills, which an individual acquires and uses together, to produce outstanding performance in any given area of entrepreneurial responsibility. Some of these competences may be general and some peculiar to the chosen areas of enterprise. We may describe competences to mean abilities and skills, for a teacher or a performing artist, for example, it is the skill to communicate that plays a decisive role in their effectiveness besides, of course, their knowledge. For a craftsman or an artist, it is the creativity and skill in the chosen craft.

In like manner, entrepreneurial competences are critical success factors required for successful entrepreneurship, business success and of course national development. The subject thus, deserves solemn attention in entrepreneurial discourse and not to be neglected. There is no substitute for entrepreneurship competence for successful entrepreneurship, not even abundant financial resources can. There is no doubt as explained, entrepreneurial competence play important role in any successful entrepreneurial activities.

The following are some of the necessary entrepreneurial competences required for successful entrepreneurship and rapid national development. We shall be discussing below 8 of the basic essential entrepreneurial competence for successful business.

1. Time Management competence: Time is an economic good; it is an economic good worthy of effective and efficient management because of it scarce nature (Dan-Abu, 2015). Time is unique, unlike any other economic resources (input) such that it has no wing but can “fly”. Time is irreplaceable and irreversible. Time lost is lost forever and can never be recovered, and by that I it includes, time lost doing insignificant things. This is why few things are more important to an entrepreneur and for successful entrepreneurship than learning how to save and spend time wisely. One major causes of entrepreneurship failure in relation to time management is doing too many things at the same time in an inefficient manner.

To achieve more and be successful in the day to day running of an enterprise, the entrepreneur must be thoroughly equipped with time management skill. Investing and practicing effective and efficient time management skill is a profitable investment for every entrepreneur, since every efficient business act is a success in itself. It therefore means that, if every single act of entrepreneurial activity is undertaken with consistent efficient one, the enterprise as a whole must be a success.

Time management involve among others practices, commitment to work contract and taking personal pains to complete a task on schedule, this will promote confidence and loyalty on your business/organization and will thus led to winning of more contracts from clients again and again; prioritizing of task based on urgency and importance in relation to a project activities and delegating of task to subordinates.

Some common time consuming activities include slow decision making, inability to delegate, unnecessary interruptions, failed appointments, delays while traveling, poorly conducted meetings, procrastination, etc.

2. Communication competence: Communication is a two-way process characterized by sending and receiving of messages through a channel between sender and receiver. This may be verbal or non-verbal for example, telephone call and procurement proposal respectively. Good communication skill is an indispensable management tool for a successful entrepreneurship. It is through communication that procurements are made, business products/services are sold, business objectives are discussed, employees are recruited etc.

Communication competence is very important to the survival and success of every organization, this is regardless of whether the organization is a profit or non-profit making, private or public enterprise, involved in provision of services or sales of products, online or offline business etc. Communication competence is so vital to successful entrepreneurship that it goes beyond inter-personal communication; of course this too is indispensable to the success of the entrepreneur’s business.

A winning communication competence in an enterprise will help in disseminating circulars, minutes, letters and memos effectively reaching every intending individual, team or unit in an organization. It also facilitates efficiency through the saving of cost involved in sending and receiving the messages on the part of both the organization and the employees. Communication competence in enterprising organizations will facilitate large turn out and compliance when meetings are called or directives are given to be followed respectively.

Communication competence in like manner can speed up the time taken to make merchandize procurement in period of high demand; this can help the concerned firm increase profit during the period of shortages and high demand.

Developing and employing good communication skill in an organization will definitely lead to two fold success; the firm will be able to benefit from internal interactions among persons, departments and units, and externally benefit from interactions between it and the business transacting partners (outside world). We can therefore say in summary that, there is no business without communication.

3. Human Resources Management Competence: The relevance of human resources management competence to successful entrepreneurship, business success and national development cannot be over stressed. Though materials and capital are of equivalent importance to the entrepreneur, they are inanimate and unemotional; they demand no understanding of human requirements and inspirations for their effective utilization unlike human resources which need good and competent human resources management skill by the entrepreneur to successfully utilize it to optimum level in productive activities.

Human resources of some enterprise are the most difficult to obtain, the most expensive to maintain and the hardest to retain. Without the acquisition and practicing of effective and efficient human resource management skills, the capital resources earlier mentioned will not be effectively used. Generally, small and medium scale enterprises often managed by an entrepreneur do not have the luxury of human resource department that can interview, hire and evaluate employees.

Most of these decisions taking regarding the above are the responsibility of the entrepreneur and perhaps one or two other key employees. This is good why human resources management competence is important for successful entrepreneurship and national development. As the firm grows, there will be need to hire new employees; entrepreneur must follow important procedures for interviewing, hiring, evaluating and preparing job description for new employees. Instituting an effective organizational culture is best implemented when an entrepreneur is competent in human resources management.

4. Marketing Management Competence: The success of every enterprise involves selling of products/services; this is largely enabled through good marketing management, it is therefore imperative for an entrepreneur to have good marketing management skills.

Ebitu (2005:196) concord, that marketing is crucial to the survival and growth of any organization. It is through marketing that revenues used for bills settlement, assets acquisition, pursuing of business diversification and expansion objectives, settlement of dividend and tax liabilities and social responsibility projects are generated. The entrepreneur in developing good marketing strategies and marketing management competence must be conversant with and employ the four marketing mix of place, promotion, price and product.

5. Adherence to Business Ethics Competence: Every business has its ethics. Ethics deals with moral ability and obligations. It can be defined as a system of rules and principles that define right and wrong, good and bad conduct and the ordering of values in undertaking business activities in society. Business ethics is sometimes called management ethics, and it is the application of ethical principles to business relationships and activities.

Business ethics is becoming a subject of intense concern for society, which is now demanding that organizations should operate responsibly and uphold very high ethical standards to improve the quality of life of the people. Entrepreneurs, in light of the above, need to be competent in dealing with different public policies, trade union’s established standards and norms and customers’ concerns for high quality work for successful entrepreneurship.

6. Financial Management Competence: Every business enterprise requires capital with which to start and continue with its operations. Capital here means two things; money (finance) needed to start and operate the business and assets representing the resources provided by owners (equity) and creditors of the business (liabilities).

Mbat (2001:3) defines financial management as the planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the firm’s financial resources. Finance is the blood at the centre of any successful business enterprise, one of the features common to successful entrepreneurs is their ability to source for funds for their enterprise. The funds mobilized internally or externally have to be properly managed to ensure that at any point in time, there is adequate funds to cater for the day to day running of the enterprise.

Most entrepreneurial failures are due to the inability of the entrepreneurs to effectively distribute and manage funds. For example, an entrepreneur needs to acquire knowledge on financial management issues like anticipation of financial needs for the enterprise, fund raising sources, cost of raising fund from external sources, acquisition of funds, allocation of funds in order to yield optimum result through identification and maintenance of correct proportion of the firm’s finances in areas of savings, insurance and investments policy of the enterprise.

The important of financial management competence to achieving entrepreneurship and business success cannot be over stressed. We have seen many at times when financially buoyant “start-ups” crumble down to pieces after successful take off because of financial management incompetence of the management, caused by tied up funds as they watch helplessly as the business dive into ocean of failure due to lack of reserve funds to successfully execute contracts or perform business operation.

Leadership Competence: leadership can be defined as the ability to influence and motivate other person or group of persons towards achieving a shared a set objective. Leadership competence is also another important single factor determining business success or failure in our competitive, turbulent, fast moving, free global market economy.

According to Ilesanmi, (2000: 187) successful entrepreneurs are successful leaders; they have power and motivate the entrepreneurial venture. The ability to produce the necessary leadership is the key determinant of achievement in all-human activities, the quality of leadership is therefore a decisive strength or weakness of any successful entrepreneurial endeavour.

Successful entrepreneurship requires creative, unique leadership qualities and personal styles. It involve seeking opportunities, initiating projects, gathering the physical, financial and human resources needed to carry out projects, setting goals for self and others, directing and guiding others to accomplish goals. Effective leadership is therefore a powerful tool required for successful entrepreneurship, business success and national development. Good leadership competence helps an entrepreneur to turn his/her business vision into reality.

7. Social Responsibility Competence: The establishment of every business enterprise is backed up by the profit motive. It is the profit that drives entrepreneurs to starting businesses, motivate shareholders into buying shares and private capital owners into investing their capital in a company. The profit motive though leads to the production of goods and services; the entrepreneur’s business venture also has the responsibility to embark on certain projects within and outside its operating environment as part of its social obligations.

Businesses should not only be concerned about the quality of goods and services they produce to generate profit but must also pursue policies that sell their enterprises by contributing to the quality of life in their operational environment. The business operators have responsibility to protect and improve society. Their actions during production and marketing should not in any way endanger the community or society. Entrepreneur can earn more profit by displaying high degree of corporate responsiveness, which is the ability of an organization to relate its operations and policies to the environment in ways that are mutually beneficial to the organization and the society.

The entrepreneur for example needs to make contribution to community development, product safety, employment generation, ethical business practices, and contribution towards educational activities in the community of operation. An enterprise for example can award scholarships to students, create opportunity for apprenticeship training and so on. Undertaking some of these social responsibilities may endear the entrepreneur’s enterprise to its host community; enhance his image and social standing, and consequently contributing significantly to his business success.

8. Decision making Competence: Decision making is very important to the success of an entrepreneur, this skill is at the core of every successful entrepreneurial activities. Decision making is the process of selecting a line of action from available alternatives. This selection process may be very difficult especially when the available alternatives are numerous or the decisions to be made or chosen from are risky ones.

Many potential entrepreneurs have difficulties in bringing their ideas to the market and creating a new business because making a decision is one thing and making the right decision in a given circumstance is another. The actual making of effective entrepreneurial decisions has resulted in several new businesses being started throughout the world by those having this decision making skill necessary for successful entrepreneurship.

An entrepreneur makes decision on a daily basis and therefore has to acquire adequate knowledge and skills in decision making to enable him/her make the right decisions.

Most of the entrepreneurial competences have been studied in isolation and with little effort to recognizing their mutual relationships to entrepreneurship success and business success. In a study aimed at explaining entrepreneurial competences in order to rank them according to the level of their importance to successful entrepreneurship by Edgar, Dirk and Danny, (2005) shows that, entrepreneurs on one hand considered decision making the most important competence while scholars in their different writings are in support of identifying business opportunities competence as the most important when embarking on an entrepreneurial venture.

In another study aimed at explaining how general and specific managerial competencies relate to the business success of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) by Laguna, Wiechetek, and Talik, (2013) proved that general and specific managerial competency is significant predictor of success in running a business. They further stated that specific managerial competency demonstrated to be a mediator between general competence and Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) success.

In a similar study conducted by Rosária de Fatima Segger Macri Russo and Roberto Sbragia, (2010) who opined that the operational responsibilities of a project manager (planning and controlling) are in stark contrast to the characteristics of an entrepreneur. In light of the above contradictory viewpoint, their research which was directed at assessing whether managers showing entrepreneurial characteristics are associated with more successful projects or not found within their study sample an empirical evidence supported their hypothesis that the possibility of a given project having a successful outcome increases with the enterprising tendency of its manager.

After critically examining the necessary entrepreneurial competences required for successful entrepreneurship, business success and rapid national development. It will be important to quickly add here that no single or sets of entrepreneurship competence are more important to the other. It is only through the combination of the competences that an entrepreneur can achieve maximum business success.

What Is The Road To Success – Do You Know What Road You Are On?

In this article, I’ve decided to answer the question that comes my way quite a bit. And that is “What IS the road to success?” And to be honest, there is not one set answer for everybody. There are a lot of variables going into the mix and each road will be different for each person. Now, there will be a number of people who have the same goals and possibly the same end result, but, they’ll arrive at their success differently because each one is an individual. An individual that was raised by different parents, went to different schools, had different friends, went to different churches, or didn’t go to church, had different jobs along the way, have different opinions, etc. So, each road to success is going to be different. But, there are some guardrails that are common for all on these roads.

What Is Success?

First of all you have to consider what your personal meaning of success is? Not everyone has the same idea of what success is for them. You may be wanting monetary success, or success at your work, relationship success or peace of mind success. Which of these areas are you looking to succeed? One or a couple? Maybe all of them? If so, that won’t be happening over a stretch of weeks. It will take some time of careful planning, sweat and tears for all the successes to be accomplished. However, there is one road to success, then there is a another road. One road is thinking of “number one”, having the “what’s in it for me” mindset. This isn’t the best way to achieve success and if you do, it will be a lonely success. Here’s the other road.

Model Yourself After Success

One of the fastest ways to reach success is to model yourself after someone who is successful. Whatever success you are after, there is sure to be others that have already succeeded in that area. Just copy what they have done to succeed. Why struggle through trial and error and make mistakes when there is already a marked pathway. If you’re wanting to open your own business, go work for someone who has already succeeded in that business. You double your benefits by learning what you need to know and getting paid for it at the same time. Once you’ve digested all you need to learn to make it in that business, take the money you’ve earned along the way and open your own business.

Mentor

Another variation of modeling yourself after someone successful, is having a mentor. This is not the same as a coach. A coach is more task oriented whereas the mentor is more relationship oriented. The coach is short-term and performance driven. The mentor is long-term and development driven. Where the coach works on improving your performance of your work now, the mentor helps you develop not only for now but for the future. A mentor will help guide you and avoid the common pitfalls of failure.

Association

One true fact is, you’ll become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. So, hang out with successful people! Spend time with optimistic people. You don’t have to be a jerk about it, but, if you’re hanging with friends that are pessimistic, lazy, and have no goals in life, start easing away from that person. Just become busy when they want to hang out. You need to start making friends and associate with those who are successful. It doesn’t matter what area of business. Success breeds success. Do it!

Help Others

Believe it or not, one of the fastest ways to success is helping others achieve success; Whether in their personal or their professional life. If you focus on the needs of others and help them achieve their goals, eventually, you’re rewards will far outnumber your deeds. Remember peoples spouses names or the names of their children, things they like to do. Show a genuine interest and caring for the person. When someone knows you have genuine interest and want the best for them, they’ll go out of their way to help you acquire what you need. Be an inspiration to others. And the hardest thing of all, you need to put the need of others ahead of your own. You would think this is a contradiction of you being successful when your needs are being put on hold. I can’t give you statistics on this but I know from personal experience that it does work. Not instantly, but over time, in the long haul, it will get you everything you ever wanted and more.

Replace Bad Habits With Good

Zig Ziglar said the fastest way to success is to replace bad habits with good habits. Bad habits can be a man’s downfall. Everyone has their own and so do I. Sleeping in is a popular one. Change that to getting up early and you’d be amazed how much you can have accomplished by lunchtime, rather than just getting started by then. When I tried this, I was completing by lunch what usually took me until 6pm to accomplish. There are a lot of bad habits you could change. Changing can’t to can is a simple one, but appears to be hard for most. Rather than being content, change that to constant self-motivation. Don’t let up on yourself. Success won’t come knocking on your door while you’re lying on the couch watching TV. Another quote of Ziglar’s is, “Of course motivation is not permanent. But, then, neither is bathing. But it is something you should do on a regular basis.” Keep yourself motivated. Success is not a destination, it’s a journey. Keep yourself going forward on that journey.

Read, Then Read Some More

I cannot stress to you enough the importance of reading. You need to get your hands on every success oriented book available. Read about successful people. Read about self-motivation. Read about getting the right mindset to succeed. The object is to be constantly learning. You can never know too much and the more you feed yourself with success thoughts to go with the successful people you are associating with the better. There are hundreds of books out there for any success road you are on.

It is a pity that many people are yet to come to terms with the fact that success is a challenge. This is why many people are unable to manage their success. Success is a challenge because it is tough and difficult. It also constitutes a challenge because it is demanding, taxing and testing. It is worthy of note that ‘challenge’ is not the same as ‘problem’. The difference between ‘challenge’ and ‘problem’ is attitude. While optimists use ‘challenge’ to describe difficult situations, pessimists use ‘problem’ to describe the same circumstances.

Success constitutes a challenge in two ways: becoming a success and remaining a success. Every individual is confronted by either of these challenges at every point in time. At every point in time, everyone is either striving to become a success or striving to sustains a success and remain a success. While successful people combat the challenge of sustaining and retaining their successes, failures and average people confront the challenge of achieving success. One of the reasons people who excel in life are celebrated is because neither of these challenges is easy.

According to the late reggae legend, Bob Marley, “Everyman thinks his burden is the heaviest”. This is why people who are still struggling to succeed in life believe that the challenge of becoming a success is more difficult than whatever challenge people who have succeeded are undergoing. But on the other hand, successful people are unhappy that most unsuccessful people do not realise that there are challenges in their world. They are unhappy that others have no sympathy for the burden of challenges their achievements place on their lives.

Indeed, achieving success is an uphill task. Channeling one’s effort into to the pursuit of success without accomplishing the set goal is unarguably very frustrating. Many people who are still struggling to achieve a meaningful life are convinced that achieving such goal is an uneasy task. Some of them believe that succeeding in life is the most difficult goal to accomplish. For some of them, after their consecutive efforts at achieving success continuously fail, they believe that they require the knowledge of some mysteries, not secrets, to accomplish success.

However, people who are successful consider their burden of challenge to be proportional to the heights they attain. Though becoming a success and remaining a success are challenges, the latter challenge is heavier than the former. If you watch the lives of wealthy people closely, for instance, you will observe that it is more difficult to maintain being rich than to become rich. This is also applicable to the lives of celebrities. This is why there are numerous people across the globe who failed after attaining very reputable positions in (different aspects) life.

Some people believe that they can remain at the top if anyone can assist them get there. This is very incorrect because it is more difficult to remain at the top than to get to the top. The implication of this is that if you can remain at the top if you were there, then you can get to the top. In other words, if you can remain being a success (if you were a success), then you can become a success. If it is more difficult to remain successful than to become successful, then whoever can maintain being a success can also become a success.

There are many people who tasted success but are numbered among failures today. There are many people who were once rich but very poor today. There are also many people who were the bests in their fields at a time, but have been displaced and rendered irrelevant. The realisation of this truth speaks very eloquently on the fact that everyone who achieves success may not be able to remain a success. The implication of this is that the failure of some successful people is only a matter of time. Some successful people are ignorant of this truth.

Success, like power, could be transient. Like a liquid, success could evaporate with time. This is why there are many people who are celebrated today but who will not be celebrated in the future. Not everyone who achieves success will die a success. By the very nature of some success, they are transient. For instance, being the best athlete of the year is a success that lasts for a year, except it is renewed. However, there are some successes that can be sustained for the rest of one’s life, if it is properly managed. An example of such is marital success.

The road to success is filled with the thorns of failures, mistakes, disappointments and setbacks, though they are usually very helpful to people in acquiring the expertise for managing success later. You will easily admit the truth in this claim if you observe the histories of most people who became rich suddenly (e.g. through lottery, inheritance, etc.). They usually go back to where they started after a while because they are unable to manage their fortunes. They cannot sustain their success because it has a very weak foundation.

Success is a challenge. It could be the beginning of failure, if it is not properly managed. Experience lends credence to the fact that it is much easier to become a success than to manage success. This is why many people are usually unable to sustain their success. The beginning of the failure of many successful people is often the conviction that it could not have been, and cannot be, otherwise. Many people forget that success is a challenge. This is why they are easily carried away by their accomplishments during their days of glory.

Success has a power of its own, a power that affects the victim’s sense of reasoning, most times, in very negative ways. Many people cannot sustain their success because they cannot manage it. They allow their achievements to control them rather than controlling their achievements. Most people do not remain the same after becoming successful, and the change is usually not for the better. This is a challenge of success. Many people easily acquire failure catalysts (arrogance, extravagance, rudeness, etc) after becoming successful.

One success can be the foundation of another success, as success begets success. But this is possible only if the successful person is able to manage his success. There are also people, though a few, who remain successful after getting to the top. Such people keep getting better and more successful as days grow older. Anyone who has once tasted failure will never love to be identified with it again if he ever becomes a success. In a similar vein, anyone who has once tasted hardship will never want to be identified with poverty, if he ever becomes rich.

But this is a condition that can be sustained only if the success is able to resist the negative effects of the pride of success. Most unfortunately, most successful people are usually unable to achieve this. This is also why their success stories usually end as once upon a time. Success is a challenge. It is up to you to determine whether you will achieve it. Even when it becomes a reality in your life, it is also up to you to determine you will sustain or lose it. These will be determined by your attitudes to life.

Success Is Progressive

Many people are in haste about success. They want to achieve success overnight. They burden themselves with thoughts about being successful. They make themselves restless by their inordinate ambitions to become successful. They have sleepless and restless nights because of their immoderate ambitions for success. If they would understand the laws of success, they would know that their problems (or worries) are unwarranted.

This is one of the reasons success remains beyond the reach of many people, despite their worries about achieving it. Success is progressive. It is not achieved overnight. It is also not achieved suddenly or accidentally. One of the implications of this is that the journey to success is one step at a time. The expressions, “The journey of a thousand miles starts with a step” and “Rome was not built in a day” best describe the claim that success is progressive.

According to Henry David Thoreau, “Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” The most important thing in achieving success is neither thinking about success nor talking about success. It is also not being (inordinately) passionate about achieving success. Rather, it is doing what you ought to do to achieve success, when you ought to do it, where you ought to do it, and how you ought to do it.

You waste time thinking about success if you are not working towards achieving it. You may also be wasting time working towards success if you are ignorant of the right things to do to achieve it. Being inordinately ambitious for success could be a gateway to self-destruction. As a matter of fact, it is inimical to success for several reasons. Success is not a product of accident or chance. Rather, it is the product of deliberate and strategic efforts.

Observations and experiences show that success is often achieved after series of trials, failures, disappointments, mistakes, errors, etc. Many of the earliest efforts that are geared towards achieving success often culminate in failures. The failures, however, are often preparations for success, but only when the lessons they teach are learnt, understood and applied in the subsequent efforts in the pursuit of success. This is why failure is not final.

Being inordinately ambitious about success impoverishes you of the patience that is necessary for enduring, persevering, overcoming and learning from failures. This is why impatient people are not candidates for success. This is also why you should not be in a hurry in the journey to success. Not being patient enough to allow things work according to the dictates of time and law of natural order accounts for why many people fail in life.

When you are too fast, you may be running backwards. In addition, when you are too fast, you may also be heading towards doom and destruction. Consequently, always ensure that you are in the right direction before increasing your speed. Do not bother about success because it comes at the appointed time, as long as you do the right things at the right time, at the right place, and in the right way. This is a fundamental truism of life.

Being inordinately ambitious for success without doing the right things will get you to nowhere, even in a distant future. If you take care of the right things, the right results will take care of themselves. If you take care of the goals, success will take care of itself. If you take care of the seconds, the hours will take care of themselves. Success is progressive. If you focus your efforts on the right things, the right results will focus on you.

Books On Being Successful

Everyone wants to be successful. In some way, form or fashion there’s a need to succeed. There are scores of books on being successful that’s been printed over the years. I’d like to point you to some of my favorites.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

As an acquaintance of mine pointed out, everyone’s idea of success is different and on different levels. There is monetary success, making millions of dollars, which seems to be the focus in today’s world. There is career success as in getting a higher position, life success like getting married and having children and self success as in being at peace with yourself. All of these are a level of success. All of these take a certain amount of personal change. That’s where my first book recommendation steps in. Steven R. Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is also known as powerful lessons in personal change.

The 7 Habits

Covey gives us a step by step pathway of living with fairness, integrity and dignity. The 7 habits are as follows:

Be proactive

Begin with the end in mind

Put first things first

Think win-win

Seek first to understand, then to be understood

Synergize

Sharpen the saw

This is just a short overview. The complete book will keep you turning pages and is very comprehensive. This book is a great book to start with if you’re looking for success on any level.

Springboard

C. Richard Shell’s Springboard is the second book I’m sharing with you. In this book he guides you in your personal search for success. He answers the two questions, “What for me, is success?” and “How will I achieve it?” The book is divided into two parts, each answering each question. Shell offers various exercises throughout the book which would be of great benefit if sincerely worked on, namely the “Six Lives Exercise”. This exercise helps the readers to assess their own view of success. The book focuses on the main element of your success; you. Rather than following your passion or following the money, he has you search for your own unique combination of skills and passions along with other career opportunities. Melding this all together, Shell calls it the “sweet spot”. Taking time to assess what success is to you is critical to you having a happy and meaningful life. Springboard will help you find this.

The Success Principles

Aw, Jack Canfield. Well known for his Chicken Soup for the Soul series (which is also a great read for the success minded individual), he gives us another winner with The Success Principles. One of my favorite books, he touts this one as how to get from where you are to where you want to be. Prepare to transform yourself for success. Canfield takes you all the way from the beginning by teaching you to build confidence and to live with passion. Once you accomplish the basics, he takes you through the inner work needed to transform yourself. Then comes the success team you build to catapult your success. And of course, with success, you’ll need financial awareness along with the principles to help maximize your gains. My favorite part of this book is where Canfield spells out the 64 principles used by successful men and women throughout history. This book will truly show you how to start living the principles of success today.

The Motivations of Success

There are many tools for achieving success, though they play different roles in the pursuit of success. One of the tools is motivation. Motivation is a very powerful tool in accomplishing a set goal. It is a precondition for achieving success. This is why every achievement is preceded by motivation. As a matter of fact, there can be no success in the absence of motivation. But what is motivation? What is the meaning of motivation?

Motivation can be defined as the enthusiasm for success. It is the stimulus to the pursuit of success. It is also the drive force for success within an individual. If you are not motivated you will lack motivation. The more motivated you are, all things being equal, the more likely you will succeed, for as long as you take actions. This is why it is very difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish any set in the absence of motivation.

The implication of this is that you cannot succeed in the absence of motivation since success is not accidental. Just as goal-setting precedes success, motivation precedes goal-setting. Hence, just as success cannot be achieved without goal-setting, goals cannot be set without motivation. The consequence of this is that success cannot be achieved without motivation. This is why motivation is a precondition for achieving success.

The term, motivation, has assumed a pride of place in scholarship in contemporary times, especially in management studies. Managers at all levels are becoming increasingly aware of the need to assist their employees to become more productive through motivation. Managers have realised that their organisations have very high probability of enjoying the optimum productivities of their employees if they are adequately motivated.

Motivation usually comes from within, though it can also be induced externally. However, since you are the best beneficiary of your success and the worst victim of your failure, you should not expect to be motivated by others before you strive for success. Success belongs to the self-motivated. If you expect to be motivated from external sources before you take the right steps in life, you may never succeed.

There are two basic motivations of success. They are the fear of failure and the pleasure of success. The shame, disgrace, embarrassment, dishonour, humiliation, pain and sadness of failure and the joy, pleasure, delight, bliss, ecstasy and happiness of success are the incentives for greater commitment in the pursuit of success. They are also the enthusiasms, incentives, inspirations and stimulations for the pursuit of success.

People who are afraid of failure always do everything within their strength to ensure that they escape it. This could be the benefit of fear. This shows that fear is not always negative, as many think. Observing the pleasure and happiness of success in the lives of successful people can also kindle the fire of passion for success. This is why ‘interacting with’ or observing and studying the lives of successful people could be very profitable.

2 Different Ways to Look at What A Successful Person Is

What comes to your mind when you think of the word success? Do you imagine living in a mansion style home and being a millionaire? Society’s definition of success compared to what success really is differs greatly. The concept of success is relative to each person. What may mean success to one person may not be considered a success to another person. This article will look at and analyze both parts.

1. Success according to society

Society defines success as when someone achieves a huge reward in cash such as when someone wins the lottery. Usually when we hear of the word success, that word is associated with financial success. Or society will judge someone to be a success when they get married, start a family of their own, live in a nice home in a nice or affluent neighborhood, or if they secure a high paying job position at a company. Society views success through achieving material things. The success that a person achieves when getting that nice home could be wiped away if a tornado or other natural disaster strikes. The high paying position that a person attains at a company could be gone if the company goes bankrupt. The point is that these kinds of things don’t last. The success that you achieve through things such as this are temporary and they won’t necessarily fulfill all of your desires and make you happy. Money, a nice house and a high paying job are all nice things to have to a certain point. But after that, they lose their value because they are material things. That stated, money is important to sustain us because we all need to have food, clothing, and shelter. These are the basic needs to survive in the world.

Material things will come and go in life. And let’s say that your health starts to fail. If that happens, there is no way that the money you have can save you because you will die. After your death, you can’t take this money or those material goods with you. They are left behind in this world for someone else to take them.

Having wealth is a great thing in some ways. But if it is used in an improper way, wealth can lead someone to commit violence or other kinds of crime. We hear so many stories of famous celebrities here in America that have lots of wealth, large homes and a great movie career, yet they are miserable. Do not let society’s definition of success ruin your self-esteem. Success should mean only what you want it to mean. This is your life to live and no one else can live your life. It is hard to not be influenced by society’s definition of success and not get carried away by it. The way that society views success is actually a very superficial way of looking at this term. Just because someone is financially successful does not mean that they are truly a success. They may have access to incredible amounts of wealth but their relationships with other people may not be very productive.

That is not true wealth. I am not saying that having money isn’t a part of wealth because it is. And many of us would like to be wealthy one day. But if the only things that you are after in life are money, a nice house, or a car, then you will base your self-worth on these things. And if you lose one or all of these things then you will not consider yourself a success anymore. Your sense of who you are will be tied to these material things and you will continue to pursue these material things in order to feel fulfilled.

2. Another Interesting Way To Look At Success

The other side of the issue of what success really should be considered is broader and different compared to the way society views success.

If you are still alive, breathing, and in good health, you are a success. If you got a high school diploma, you are a success. If you got one or more college degrees, you are a success. If you were able to hold a job successfully and perform all your duties then you are a success. Do you see how this concept works? Success should mean something different to everyone. Every person is different and they should be given the chance to view success how they want to view it. If you are able to support yourself financially on $15 per hour, then should you not be considered a success? Of course you should be considered a success even if you earn a lower salary than your friends do. If you earn a lower salary and you are happier than someone who earns millions of dollars but they are unhappy, guess which person would be happier? You would be happier than the other person because you are living a life of better quality than the rich person that is unhappy.

Surveys every year indicate that people in countries such as Mexico and Venezuela are happier in general than the average American, British or German. It seems to me that the less you have, you tend to appreciate what you already have much more. And it is part of human nature that the more we have, the more that we want because many people feel that what they have is not enough. I am actually not like many people because I already appreciate what I have and although there are certain things that I desire, I won’t complain.

After all, what good is the large amount of money, a big home and two cars going to do for you if for example you have a disease such as cancer? The money or the home or the cars won’t save your health in that situation. Success should not be limited to having large amounts of wealth, two cars and a nice big home for you and your family to live in. You should define success how you wish to define it. You are more successful than you think you are if you look at your situation really closely. You will have lots of things to be grateful for even if you are not living the life of a celebrity. Dr. John Demartini, one of the speakers in the DVD movie The Secret said something that should be an inspiration to all of us.

“Gratitude is the key that opens the door to the human heart.”

You have open up your heart by being grateful for what you have. It is said that the more you are grateful for what you have now, the more that you will get in the future. Open up your heart to gratitude and you will see just how your life will be changed for the better. I have been practicing this technique for several years and see just how much more amazing and awesome my life has become.

Do not be carried away by society’s definition of success. If there is one thing that I would like you to remember from this article it is that you should define success the way that you want to define it. It doesn’t matter if the media views success in another way. That definition of success is really superficial in nature. If you consider yourself to be a success then that is what you are and what you will become as you keep viewing yourself as a success. Remember that you sense of self and who you really are isn’t based on the amount of material things that you have. You are a human being that has the potential and ability to think and reason. Start seeing yourself as a success and over time you will become a success. How much you see yourself as a success depends on what success means to you.
